Trip 2010

Kevin and Liz set off in July 2010 in their new white Discovery 3 and a repainted camper trailer to match.  This time they headed north first up to Kunnunurra and then across the top via the Carpentaria Highway with the rain following them all the way. After many boulder strewn river crossings  (the last 1.5m deep!) they reached Normanton in Queensland.  Then north again along  the old telegraph line with another 21 river crossings involving many challenging entry and exit points, finally reaching the top of Cape York three days later.

The next scenic stage was down to Cooktown and Cairns via the coast,  traversing steep and muddy terrain – the Discovery 3 handled everything thrown at it with ease. A three day stopover at the Daintree Rain Forest was absolutely awesome – what magnificent country. Next  to Townsville, visiting family in Gladstone and Tara and then on again to South Australia – still raining!   Through the Flinders Range up to Maree, Williams Creek and Cooper Pedy.  A highlight was a flight over a full Lake Eyre – breathtaking!

Then on again, just ahead of road closures – slipping and sliding in the mud via the Balladonia Track, all the way to Esperance (where the rain stopped!)  and then finally back  home six weeks and 16,500k later.  A wonderful trip with many highlights – can’t wait to do it all again!
